What is short film?

1. A short film is any film not long enough to be considered a feature film. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences defines a short film as "an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits". For my final product, the length of the short film will between 4-8 minutes, including all credits.

There are no hard-and-fast rules as to what makes a good short film but they should involve:

• An Exciting & Original Idea
• A Strong Script
• Good Acting
• High Production Values
• Make It Short
• Strong Beginning
• Avoid Repetition & Punch line Twists
• Possibly Avoid Speech

Example Short Films:

Toy Story of Terror- The toys go on a road trip, when an unexpected event leads them to a roadside motel, after one of the toys goes missing, the others find themselves caught up in a mysterious, monstrous, and terrifying sequence of events that must be solved before they all suffer the same fate.

Beast Friend-  A young man's attempt to move in with his wife is thwarted by his domineering cat. This comedy short has a simple storyline and clever comedy lines including one cut off swear but lots of stereotypes including the cat being seen as a real human with a Scottish accent by the main character. Directed by Ewan Torrance, written by Fergus Mitchell and starts Ed Byrne as the main character (young man), Raymond Mearns (as Fluff the cat) and lastly Lucy Goldie (as the young female).
